What’s New with Dice Hate Me Games

Dice Hate Me Games is a special game company because company head honcho Chris Kirkman is a good friend and I get to game with him on a regular basis. So it is only natural that I launch What’s New…! with DHMG.

Chris made several BIG announcements last week. DHMG has signed three new games to the family.PortfolioVivaJavaDice-435x435-1

First is no real surprise. It’s Viva Java: The Dice Game from T. C. Petty III the designer of DHMG’s Viva Java: The Coffee Game. VivaJava Dice, is the successor to the well-received 2012 release of VivaJava: The Coffee Game. Just as in its predecessor, players of VivaJava Dice take on the roles of employees at the VivaJava CoffeeCo., scouring the globe for the best beans to keep the company on top while keeping themselves one step ahead of the rest of the executives.

Next up is Brew Crafters. From the DHMG site -  Brew Crafters, players assume management of a local craft brewery, working hard to manage resources, use their workers PortfolioBrewCrafters-435x435-1wisely, and develop their brewing line to create the best local brews. Brew Crafters honors the tradition of classic Euro games such as Agricola and Puerto Rico, but at its heart beats a unique brewery processing system that must be constantly improved, monitored and manned in order to keep the beloved beverages rolling off the line.

Lastly is my favorite, Belle of the Ball from Daniel Solis. It’s my favorite cause Daniel is a good friend and it’s the only one I’ve actually played. Oh, and it’s a REALLY fantastic game. It’s accessible, anyone can play this one. Daniel has been working on this one for a loooonngg time and it shows. It’s a smooth, easy to learn, easy to play. I am really glad Chris picked this one up. It’s going to be very successful I know.  Here’s some info on it from DHMG. In the card game Belle of the Ball, players take on the roles of party hosts, seeking the best mix of guests to make their gala the greatest by the end of the night. In order to ensure that they stay one step ahead of the other hosts, players will have to carefully watch the growing line of guests at the door, inviting those in that seem to share passions with party-goers alrePortfolioBelleoftheBall-435x435-1ady inside, all the while handing out their precious stash of Regrets to those who should seek refuge elsewhere. Of course, other hosts may find it advantageous to invite a rejected guest inside just to collect their accumulated Regrets for later use.

In addition to these games, Chris will be delving into video reviews as well as increasing his review output.

It’s looking like everything is coming up sixes for Dice Hate Me Games.

I thought I would do a quick update and highlight some interesting Kickstarter games.

dungeon roll

First up, Dungeon Roll from Tasty Minstrel Games. Dungeon Roll is a quick dice based dungeon crawler. Here’s some flavor text from the KS – “A vicious dragon is out there… Assemble your party at the tavern… Slay the dragon! Grab the treasure! OH GLORIOUS GLORY!!! Dungeon Roll is a light and quick press-your-luck dice game with many important and interesting decisions.” It has custom dice, cool art, and a TON of other stuff. It  is only $15 delivered! Here’s the link.

Achtung! Cthulhu is a really cool rpg setting that deserves some attention. Here’s the flavor text – Discover thachtung!e secret history of World War Two – stories of the amazing heroism in which stalwart men and women struggled to overthrow a nightmare alliance of science and the occult, of frightening inhuman conspiracies from the depths of time, and the unbelievable war machines which were the product of Nazi scientific genius – and how close we all came to a slithering end! The Secret War has begun! It is compatible with Call of Cthulhu RPG and Savage Worlds RPG. You can support it here.

Here’s an older game that is making a fresh new start – Deadwood Studios from Cheapass Games. Deadwood is one of Cheapass’s ‘bigger’ games.  From the KS – “The game happens at Deadwood Studios, makers of terrible Western movies. DeadwoodWebHeaderPlayers wander across the backlot each day, looking for acting jobs. After you take a role, you can roll a die and try to “act,” or you can “rehearse” to improve your odds.’”It had a base game with multiple expansions for different genres of movies. I really like the Cheapass Games that I have played and this one, with the sweet update, looNP cardsks just as good. Check it out here.

Nothing Personal is a game from TomVasel and Stephen Avery that had a successful KS campaign a while back. Now there is a deck of standard playing cards with the art from Nothing Personal available on KS. You can check it out here.zombie house blitz1

Next, Zombie House Blitz from Stupid Awesome Games. A speed card game to play with friends and family. Save people from the zombies, even if grandma might have to be left behind. This sounds like a pretty cool take on Ligretto from designer Jeremiah Lee. You may remember him from Zombie In My Pocket, one of the most popular print ‘n’ play games on BGG. Jeremiah is back with ZHB. AND he’ll be a guest on Go Forth And Game very soon.  Support Zombie House Blitz right here.

Question of the Month

It’s that time again, time for the Question of the Month. This month’s question is

How do we grow gaming?

As avid gamers we want to share our passion. We want to see gaming get bigger and even more bring the fun and joy we experience to others.
So how do we do this?
Leave your ideas below.

This Week In Gaming – 13jul12

Let’s get right to it.

What I played:
Z has taken to 10 Days In The USA. He has chosen that over the rest all week. We have played it about 4 times. And he didn’t win any of them. Yet he keeps choosing it. That’s the mark of a good game. The oldest daughter even joined us for a game (and subsequently won).
We played Memoir’44 again too.
We also got a play in of my game, Opening Day. In Opening Day, players are duck hunters trying to bag the most ducks. It has a lot of ‘take that’ and some interesting decisions. I’ll talk more about it in an In The Lab post soon.

I played the tutorial for Summoner Wars on my iPad.  It was fun and I’ll probably buy the bundle soon so I can actually play someone.

Gaming News
The biggest thing to me this week was all the talk in the blogosphere about game reviews. I think every game blogger and podcaster was talking about whether getting review copies of games affects the review. I have something to say about this but I think I’ll leave it for another post.
Another issue that was all over the place was The Jones Theory and whether it makes sense. The Jones Theory states that if you have two games that, in Tom Vasel’s words, ‘scratch the same itch’, you do not need them both. Get rid of one. I’ll post on this later too.

The Dice Tower awards were announced. You can find them here.

Days of Wonder announced the return of Mystery of the Abbey.  I’ve not played this one so I’m kind of excited to play this at some time.

Spiel des Jahres winners were announced.  The Spiel des Jahres 2012 winner is Kingdom Builder.  This is no real surprise.  It’s a game that hits all the check marks.  It’s a good game.  I’ve played it a couple of times and like it ok.  But it has some issues.  I hear the Nomads expansion fix this so I’m hoping to play it again soon.  The Kennerspiel winner is Village.  I’ve not played it yet as it is not imported into the USA. Yet.  Tasty Minstrel will be bringing it over soon I hope.  I’m hoping to snag a copy.

Ace Detective funded successfully on Kickstarter.  This one is a card game from Richard Lanius and has a pulp theme and art from Black Mask.  So of course I had to buy it.  It looks great.

That’s about it.  I’m off to work on those posts I talked about and an interview with Bully Pulpit Games’ Steve Segedy and Jason Morningstar!

Go Forth And Game,

My Happy Farm and Tooth & Nail

This is just a note to remind you that Tooth & Nail from Small Box Games as well as My Happy Farm from 5th Street Games will be finishing their Kickstarter campaigns soon. Both are just shy of reaching their goals. Head on over to the respective Kickstarter sites and pledge your support of these two fun games.

I forgot one from Crash Games!

Crash Games has a Kickstarter you should check out – Legend of The Lost Dutchman.
It’s right here – http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/crashgames/legend-of-the-lost-dutchman?ref=live. I’ve played this and it’s fun.

Off Your Rocker is almost there.

Off your Rocker is less than two days from the end of its Kickstarter campaign. It’s at 90% funded. How about helping push it over the top? Head over to its website and lend your support.

Update Time!

I thought I would let you know how a few things are going.

First The Survivor.  It’s moving along.  I’ve sent it to several people for some playtest feedback.  I’m working on converting it from a chart driven game to a card driven one.  I have a card template and am transferring the text to form the cards.  The cool thing I’ve discovered is that with the change I can add scenario specific events and situations.  And actually add more text and graphics.  It will be much nicer.

Other game designs

Comatose is going back to the original idea of corrupt, evil nursery rhyme and fairy tale characters as the antagonists.  But I had a couple of major revelations that changes things quite a bit.  The first and biggest is the characters are no longer young adults.  Now they are elderly, occupants of an assisted living facility.  Their grandchildren have been taken by the evil rhymes.  The grandparents have to enter RhymeLand to rescue them.  The corruption aspect of the game remains except corruption causes the characters to grow younger as well as more corrupt, tied to the Land.  The other change simplifies the corruption dice mechanic.  Each characteristic starts with a certain number of dice.  As the character is corrupted, dice are removed from characteristics and added to the GM’s Corruption Pool.  These are available for the GM to use in the game during challenges, to change something in the story, or entice the players to do something.  It seems to work well and accomplishes what I want.

Home Front is coming together very well.  I’ve collected all my notes into one document finally.  I’m working on prototyping the game now.  I’ll post more on Home Front later in its own post.

The Gold Rush, The Cell Game, and Big Pharma are in holding stages while I finish the games above.

Go Forth website update is moving forward slowly.  I recently began learning GIMP to work on a logo and am seeking some professional advice from some good friends who are graphic artists.

I have several new interviews in the que as well as reviews of Belfort, For Sale, Bazaar, and Revolution pending.  I’m planning on increasing my review rate.  I would like to do more to add my voice to the mix.

To that end, if you are a game company or designer and would like me to consider your game for a review, send me an email at goforthandgame@gmail.com.  Note that I like to play a game at least 3 times before I review it.

Lastly, if there are any topics you would like me to talk about or if you have suggestions, leave a comment below.

That’s it for updates.  Please comment below if you have something to tell me.
